Acetylene Plant Safety: How a Well-Built Plant Fails Safe

Acetylene is a high-value industrial fuel, and a properly engineered plant handles it safely at every stage. This guide explains the principles that make an acetylene plant fail safe — and the codes it must meet.

The first rule: never acetylene and air together

Acetylene forms a wide, easily-ignited flammable range with air, and it can decompose under pressure even without air. So the cardinal safety rule of an acetylene plant is that acetylene is never compressed or stored with air present. On an IIGAS plant, all lines and vessels are purged with dry nitrogen to remove air before acetylene is admitted, served by a dedicated 4–6 cylinder nitrogen bank at the purge and flushing points.

Flashback arrestors at every stage

A flashback arrestor stops a flame or a decomposition front from travelling back up the gas line. A well-built plant does not rely on a single device — it layers them:

  • Wet-type flashback arrestors at the generator outlet, mounted in parallel
  • A dry-type flashback arrestor at the cylinder charging manifold
  • A uniflow valve cum flashback arrestor on every filling limb
  • Reverse-flow check valves, safety valves and auto-vent valves throughout

Temperature and pressure, held automatically

Because the carbide-to-water reaction is exothermic, runaway temperature is the main process hazard. IIGAS generators meter water to hold the reaction at a 58–60 °C set point, and the plant is interlocked so the carbide feed will not run on low water, high water, high temperature or low control-air pressure. Alarms trip the feed at 70 °C tank temperature and at high or low water level.

Alarmed, interlocked and fail-safe

  • Instrument-air failure stops every motor except the slurry agitator
  • Three safety valves on the generator tank, plus one in each flashback arrestor
  • The spring-loaded carbide valve snaps shut the instant feed stops, sealing carbide from moisture
  • Flameproof motors with certificates on all drives
  • Visual and audible alarms on the generator-mounted control panel; an emergency stop at the exit door
