The short answer
Maintain an acetylene plant on six fixed intervals — daily, weekly, monthly, half-yearly, annual and multi-year. The daily and weekly tasks keep the gas path clean and the safety devices honest; the longer intervals cover lubrication, wear inspection and the deep cleaning of the generator, purifier, driers and cooler-condenser. Skipping the small jobs is what causes the big failures.
Keep a bound Maintenance Log Book. Recording every check, drain and part change is not paperwork for its own sake — it is what lets you spot a recurring fault early and prove the plant was operated to PESO and IS 8471 requirements.
Daily checks (every shift / start-up)
The daily routine takes minutes and catches the faults that turn into shutdowns. Do it before start-up and repeat the key readings each shift.
- ✓Confirm generator water level is between the low and high marks, and that the low-water alarm is armed.
- ✓Check generator temperature is holding in the normal band (about 58–60 °C); investigate any climb toward the 70 °C trip.
- ✓Drain condensate from the flashback arrestors, scrubber and high-pressure driers.
- ✓Verify instrument-air pressure is normal and the air compressor is cutting in and out correctly.
- ✓Walk the gas path for leaks with soap solution — never a flame — at valves, flanges and manifold.
- ✓Check cooling-water flow through the cooler-condenser and the compressor water tank.
Weekly maintenance
The weekly tasks keep the moving parts lubricated and prove that every safety device still works. Section 6 of the plant manual fixes these as a routine.
- ✓Lubricate the carbide-hopper mechanism and the screw-feed drive.
- ✓Drain water from the generator flashback arrestors and from the scrubber.
- ✓Leak-test every safety valve and confirm each lifts at its set pressure.
- ✓Function-test the low-water alarm and the temperature trip.
- ✓Inspect the sacrificial anodes in the compressor water tank.
- ✓Check the electrical motors — mountings, ventilation, current draw, temperature.
Half-yearly, annual and multi-year service
These are the interval tasks from Section 7 of the manual — the ones that decide how long the plant lasts. Miss the annual generator clean or the gearbox oil change and wear accelerates fast.

Intervals shorten if the plant runs more than one shift or on dusty carbide — lime builds up faster in the cooler-condenser and the driers when carbide dust is high.
Looking after the acetylene compressor
The compressor is the hardest-working machine in the plant and the one that most rewards discipline. Three habits add years to it:
- ✓Keep the crankcase oil at level and change it on schedule with the correct non-detergent grade — detergent oil emulsifies and starves the oil pump.
- ✓Drain the interstage traps and driers on schedule so condensate never carries into the next stage.
- ✓Keep interstage purge / safety valves free, and never let the machine run overloaded — check free rotation before start-up.
- ✓Watch the oil colour: grey oil means water has entered the crankcase — drain the emulsion and find the leak before it scores the bores.
If interstage or final-stage safety valves start discharging, or cylinder filling slows, treat it as worn valves or piston rings and act — do not run the machine harder to compensate.
Keep the log book
Every entry in the Maintenance Log Book — a drained trap, a replaced diaphragm, an alarm test — builds a history. When a fault recurs, the log tells you whether it is a one-off or a pattern, which is the difference between a five-minute fix and a stripped-down generator. It is also your evidence of compliant operation at the next PESO inspection.
