What a flashback arrestor does — and why every line needs one
A flashback arrestor is a safety device that shuts off gas flow and extinguishes the flame when combustion travels back through a gas line toward its source. Without one, a flashback caused by an unpurged line, wrong pressure, a leak or incorrect operation can reach your regulator, manifold, pipeline or cylinder — with destructive results. As the flame travels along a long pipe its velocity can rise to supersonic, detonation levels, which is why arrestors must sit as close to the flame as possible and on the supply side too.
We recommend fitting flashback arrestors on both the fuel-gas line and the oxygen line — at the torch inlet, at the regulator outlet, and on manifolds, cylinder banks and pipelines.
The KIG-FBA series — a model for every duty
| Model | Duty | Max working pressure | Connections |
|---|---|---|---|
| KIG-FBA-PM | Pipelines & gas manifolds — acetylene, LPG, hydrogen, natural gas, oxygen, air | 25 bar | G3/8″, M16×1.5, UNF 9/16″ & 5/8″, 1/4″ NPT (LH fuel / RH oxygen) |
| KIG-FBA-HP | Welding & cutting hose pipes — torch and regulator end | 2 bar | Hose 5–10 mm, 1/4″–3/8″ BSP, LH/RH |
| KIG-FBA-NRV | Non-return valve + flame trap for LPG, natural gas & hydrogen with air/oxygen | 25 bar | Threaded DN6–DN40 · flanged DN32–DN150 |
| KIG-FBA-WT | Wet-type arrestor for acetylene plants and bulk lines | 1.5 bar @ 25–50 Nm³/hr | 1″ and 1½″ flanged |
Each arrestor combines up to five safety elements: a contaminant filter, a spring-loaded non-return valve (gas flows one way only), a flame block, a flame trap, and — on fuel-gas models — a temperature-activated flow cut-off that shuts the gas off on a sustained flashback. Other threads, flanged connections, stainless-steel construction and special surface finishes are available on request.
Made to the standards, tested to the standards
KIG-FBA flashback arrestors are manufactured to BIS 11006, ISO 5175 and EN 730-1. To prevent dangerous cross-connection, fuel-gas arrestors use left-hand (LH) threads and oxygen/air arrestors right-hand (RH) threads. Arrestors should be tested for gas tightness and gas return by a qualified person at least once a year, and replaced after any flashback — we support both with spares and replacement programmes.
Because IIGAS designs complete acetylene plants — where wet-type arrestors, dry arrestors and uniflow valve-cum-flashback-arrestors protect every stage from generator to filling manifold — our arrestors are engineered from real plant-operating experience, not just catalogue specifications.
Trusted where a flashback is not an option
IIGAS flashback arrestors protect oxy-fuel and gas-distribution systems at Cochin Shipyard, Oman Drydock, Visakhapatnam Steel Plant, IIT Madras (including stainless-steel and hydrogen service), INOX Air Products and gas pipeline operators across India and the Middle East — alongside the hundreds of acetylene plants we have built worldwide.
