Acetylene is the hottest-burning of the common fuel gases, which makes it the first choice for welding, cutting and a wide range of metalworking — and it is also an important chemical feedstock. Here is what acetylene is actually used for.

The short answer

Acetylene (C₂H₂) is used mainly as a fuel gas for oxy-acetylene welding, cutting and metal fabrication, and as a chemical feedstock. Burned with oxygen it produces a flame of about 3,100–3,500 °C — the highest practical flame temperature and the highest combustion intensity of any common fuel gas — which is why it cuts and welds faster and cleaner than propane or natural gas. It is supplied dissolved in cylinders (dissolved acetylene, or DA) so it can be stored and transported safely.

Oxy-acetylene welding and cutting

The largest use of acetylene is the oxy-acetylene flame for joining and severing metal:

  • Gas welding — mild steel, cast iron, copper, aluminium, stainless and more, especially for jobbing, repair and varied light-gauge work
  • Oxygen cutting — the acetylene preheat flame ignites the steel; the cut is driven by a jet of cutting oxygen
  • Brazing and braze-welding — joining dissimilar metals with brass or silver filler
  • Bevel and precision cutting — where acetylene’s intense, concentrated preheat is the most economical choice

Acetylene wins here because heat-transfer rate, not just temperature, decides welding and cutting productivity. As the standard reference — S.A. Miller’s Acetylene (1965) — records, the neutral oxy-acetylene flame has a combustion intensity of about 3.45 kcal/cm²·s, roughly twice that of propane, so a welder switching to a cheaper gas loses productive heat.

Metal fabrication and surface treatment

Beyond welding and cutting, the oxy-acetylene flame drives a whole family of industrial processes:

  • Hardfacing — depositing wear-resistant alloys (Stellite, tungsten carbide) on valve seats, drill bits and cutting tools
  • Metal spraying / metallising — spraying zinc or aluminium for corrosion protection on steel, ships and structures
  • Flame hardening — surface-hardening gears, axles, cams and rails
  • Gouging and scarfing — removing weld defects and dressing steel slabs and billets
  • Flame cleaning, straightening and bending — descaling steel, and correcting distortion without a furnace

Air-acetylene: soldering, leak detection and more

Burned with air rather than pure oxygen, acetylene gives a cooler, simpler flame used for soldering and silver soldering, lead burning, hot-gas welding of plastics, paint removal, and — because halogens change the flame colour — refrigerant leak detection. Its portable, pencil-like torch reaches joints a large flame cannot.

Acetylene as a chemical feedstock

Historically and still today, acetylene is an important building block in the chemical industry, used in the synthesis of a range of organic chemicals and intermediates.
