Nitrogen (N₂) makes up most of the air we breathe and is valued in industry precisely because it is inert and dry. Because nitrogen displaces oxygen and moisture, it is used to blanket and purge storage tanks, reactors and pipelines — preventing oxidation, spoilage and explosion risk. Liquid nitrogen’s extremely low temperature (−196 °C) drives cryogenic food freezing and chilling, sample preservation, shrink-fitting and cryogenic grinding. Nitrogen is also a clean assist gas for laser cutting and a controlled atmosphere for heat treatment, electronics and pharmaceuticals.
