Carbide Lime (Carbide Sludge): Uses and Disposal

When calcium carbide reacts with water to make acetylene, it leaves calcium hydroxide — “carbide lime” or “carbide sludge”. Far from being pure waste, it is hydrated lime and has genuine value in construction, soil treatment and neutralisation when handled correctly.

The short answer

Carbide lime is the calcium hydroxide, Ca(OH)₂, produced as a by-product of acetylene generation. Every kilogram of calcium carbide that reacts with water yields acetylene plus this hydrated-lime slurry, drained from the generator as a wet paste or slurry:

CaC₂ + 2 H₂O → C₂H₂ + Ca(OH)₂

Chemically it is essentially the same slaked lime used across the construction industry — which is why, handled properly, carbide lime is a resource rather than simply a disposal problem.

Properties and handling

Fresh carbide sludge is strongly alkaline (high pH) and should be handled with the same care as any lime: gloves, eye protection and good ventilation. It may carry a faint acetylene odour from trapped gas when fresh, so drain and store it away from ignition sources until it has fully de-gassed.

  • Strongly alkaline — treat as an irritant; protect skin and eyes.
  • Allow fresh sludge to de-gas away from ignition sources.
  • Settles into a lime paste; the clear liquor above can often be decanted and reused as generator make-up water.
