The short answer
Carbide lime is the calcium hydroxide, Ca(OH)₂, produced as a by-product of acetylene generation. Every kilogram of calcium carbide that reacts with water yields acetylene plus this hydrated-lime slurry, drained from the generator as a wet paste or slurry:
Chemically it is essentially the same slaked lime used across the construction industry — which is why, handled properly, carbide lime is a resource rather than simply a disposal problem.
Properties and handling
Fresh carbide sludge is strongly alkaline (high pH) and should be handled with the same care as any lime: gloves, eye protection and good ventilation. It may carry a faint acetylene odour from trapped gas when fresh, so drain and store it away from ignition sources until it has fully de-gassed.

Uses for carbide lime
