SA = Simple asphyxiant.
Hazard identification (GHS)
- Contains gas under pressure; may explode if heated (H280).
- Simple asphyxiant — lighter than air, displaces oxygen and can cause rapid suffocation in enclosed or high spaces.
First-aid measures
Inhalation (asphyxiation): remove to fresh air; rescuers use self-contained breathing apparatus. Give artificial respiration if not breathing, oxygen if breathing is difficult, and get medical help.
Handling & storage
- Ventilate enclosed areas — helium accumulates at high level; monitor oxygen before entry to confined spaces.
- Store cylinders upright, capped, below 52 °C; segregate full and empty cylinders.
- Open valves slowly; keep valves and fittings clean.
