Hazard identification (GHS)

  • Contains gas under pressure; may explode if heated (H280).
  • Asphyxiant in high concentrations; is also physiologically active — headache, dizziness and unconsciousness above ~5 %.
  • Solid/liquid CO₂ and cold vapour cause frostbite.

First-aid measures

Inhalation: remove to fresh air; give oxygen or artificial respiration as needed and get medical help. Frostbite: flush affected skin with lukewarm water; do not rub; seek medical attention.

Handling & storage

  • Ensure good ventilation; CO₂ is heavier than air and accumulates in cellars, pits and confined spaces.
  • Store cylinders upright, capped, below 52 °C, away from heat.
  • Use pressure regulators rated for CO₂; open valves slowly.
