SA = Simple asphyxiant.

Hazard identification (GHS)

  • Contains gas under pressure; may explode if heated (H280).
  • Simple asphyxiant — heavier than air, collects in pits and low or confined spaces and can cause rapid suffocation.

First-aid measures

Inhalation (asphyxiation): remove to fresh air immediately; rescuers must wear self-contained breathing apparatus. Give artificial respiration if not breathing, oxygen if breathing is difficult, and obtain medical attention.

Handling & storage

  • Argon is denser than air — ventilate low-lying and confined work areas and check oxygen levels before entry.
  • Store cylinders upright, capped, below 52 °C; segregate full and empty cylinders.
  • Never strike an arc on a cylinder; keep valves clean and open them slowly.
